Polisher Technical Glossary: Terms Explained
Understanding technical language helps you make informed decisions and to communicate exactly what your soil needs. Here we define, without unnecessary technicalities, the concepts that we use daily.
Magnesium Fluorosilicate
What is it: Inorganic chemical compound used in traditional crystallization.
How it works: When applied to marble or terrazzo and rubbed with steel wool, it generates an exothermic reaction that transforms the surface into calcium fluoride and gelatinous silica. The result is a vitrified, hard layer with a mirror shine.
When is it used? On natural stone floors that have lost their shine but retain their structural integrity.
Steel Wool vs. Fiber Discs
Steel wool (grades 000 to 3): Generates controlled friction and localized heat. Essential to activate the crystallization reaction without scratching the stone.
Fiber/polyurethane discs: They are used in deep cleaning, removing waxes or applying sealants. They do not generate the temperature necessary to crystallize.
Rotary Machine vs. Planetary
Rotary (single head): A single disk rotates on its axis. Ideal for crystallizing, polishing and surface treatments. Adjustable weight and RPM depending on material.
Planetary (multi-disc): Several plates rotate simultaneously in opposite orbits. Eliminates circular marks, levels better and is preferred for high-demand tuning or large surfaces.
Roughing
What is it: Initial phase of mechanical polishing. Coarse-grained diamond discs (16, 30, 50, 100) are used to remove damaged layers, level "eyebrows" between tiles or remove deep stains.
Technical note: It requires experience to not alter the original thickness of the piece. It is always followed by progressive polishing with finer grains.
Crystallized
Thermochemical-mechanical treatment that closes pores and creates a vitrified layer on the surface. It is not a varnish: it is a molecular modification of the stone that increases hardness and shine.
"Wet Effect" Sealant
Penetration product designed for hydraulic and porous stones. Does not form surface film. Nourishes mineral pigments, intensifies color and provides a satin finish without blocking breathability.
